Leather Tips
Upholstery is the production of furniture, particularly chairs/seats, with wadding, webbing, springs, and a leather or fabric cover. The term upholstery is derived from 2 Middle English words - up and holden, which means to 'hold up'. The word applies to home furniture as well as to automobile and boat production.A worker in upholstering furniture is generally referred to as an upholsterer, while an upholsterer who works on boats is called a marine trimmer and one who works on automobiles is called an auto trimmer or motor body trimmer.
If you need a large leather repair or recover, you would take your piece of furniture to a furniture upholsterer or to a motor trimmer if it is automobile seats.
If however, you need only need a smaller type repair, a recolour, leather restoration, leather car products or general leather repairing, you can call a leather repairer such as ourselves which is usually an onsite service as we are.
Aniline leather - this is a kind of leather where top quality leather hides are processed with aniline as a dye. This creates a supple, soft, delicate leather.
Leather, customarily for aesthetic reasons and to conceal blemishes, is coloured. Aniline leather however, is not painted/coloured. It is quite often referred to as naked leather. This process will allow the leather to naturally breathe and this makes the leather to increase the comfortable in the hot sticky season as well as the cold weather.
Extra care is needed while using this kind of furniture - it is rather susceptible to premature discolouration by the sun and subject to staining from liquid spillages. Leather repairs are possible on this type of leather though a great deal of care must be taken and the correct materials used.
Bicast leather, (bycast leather) which is also called PU leather or split leather (split hide), is a manufactured upholstery product comprised of a heavy polyurethane coat put on a leather or leather fibres that have been reconstituted into a piece of leather. It is most often found in cheap furniture.
There are manufacturers that will use the bycast process to treat their leather, which produces a shiny, smooth finish, and protects the leather as well.
As bicast leather is really a synthetic or reconstituted product, some countries (such as the United Kingdom and New Zealand) disallow it to be marketed and sold as leather.
This type of 'leather' is best to avoid if possible, good leather repairs can be achieved, but its lasting value is often a disapointment.
Nappa leather (Napa leather) is a full-grain or natural finish leather, that is usually dyed and comes from unsplit lamb- kid- or sheep-skin by treating it with aluminium sulfate or salts of chromium as a tanning process, and is particularly known for durability and softness. It is commonly used in top- quality leather items such as accessories such as luggage and wallets and also high-end furniture. Such an example would be luxury vehicles interiors.
Nappa leather is also quite repairable though great care must also be taken not to damage leather as it is particularly soft.
We hope this short guide helps you to choose the leather furniture that will suit your needs. -->
